Visual & manuscript record — Воскресение / Resurrection (1889–1899)

Last modified 10 August 2026 · view source

Overview

The collection divides into four groups: (1) Pasternak Resurrection illustrations; (2) photographs and portraits of Tolstoy and his circle (~1895–1901); (3) manuscripts, proofs, and museum originals held at Russian institutions; (4) print artefacts — edition scans, serialisation context, and related documents.

Group 1 — Pasternak illustrations (19 distinct compositions, all PD, all cached locally). The Commons sweep confirmed 21 files representing 19 distinct illustrated scenes — two subjects each appear in two printing variants: the Nekhlyudov-waking opening (res-awake-002 and 1900-awakening) and the Katyusha-at-the-dock trial scene (res-awake-004 and chapter35). The fresher-print versions are preferred for embeds. The Russian Museum channel separately catalogued 9 original drawings held at ГМТ; these are rights-reserved and not downloadable, but confirm the physical provenance and exact dimensions for each plate. The most important uncatalogued originals are the 1899 commission plates (КП-6420 group, including the Easter night scene КП-6420/9 and the trial scene КП-6420/12) and the flogging-scene plate КП-6420/15, which directly evidences censorship impact on the illustration series.

Group 2 — Photographs and portraits (~1895–1901), 36 entries, all PD or CC BY 4.0, all cached locally. Covers: Tolstoy writing-period studio and informal portraits (8 items, 1895–1901); Pasternak portraits of Tolstoy as artist (4 paintings); Repin portraits of Tolstoy (4 paintings including the iconic barefoot 1901); Chertkov (4 items); Koni (5 items); Pobedonostsev (3 paintings); Biryukov (7 items); Sofia Tolstaya (2); Doukhobors (7). One item (chekhov-gorky-tolstoy) carries a CC BY 4.0 licence from Glavarkhiv Moskvy — attribution required; all others are PD.

Group 3 — Manuscripts, proofs, and museum originals, 20 entries, all rights-reserved/request-only. Three manuscript records (RU-MS-01 to -03) at ГМТ and ИРЛИ cover the earliest dated autograph (26 Dec 1889), the near-final 446-sheet fair copy, and the censored proof set with blue-pencil deletions for chapters XXXIX–XL (the church-service / Eucharist scene). These proofs are the highest-value uncatalogued visual target in the entire collection and have not been digitised. Five portrait records cover Koni (ГМТ pencil drawing, Tretyakov oil), Pobedonostsev (ГРМ Repin study and Serov portrait — the latter cross-referenced with a PD Commons reproduction), and a Chertkov wood sculpture. A journal record (RU-JRN-01) confirms the ГМТ holds the 1899 Нива run; a rare-book record (RU-BK-01) confirms the ГМТ holds the 1900 Свободное слово edition. None of these are downloadable without a reproduction request.

Group 4 — Print artefacts, 13 distinct edition/document entries, 9 with cached image files. Open scans exist on archive.org for the Henderson 1900 EN (33 Pasternak plates), Dodd Mead 1900 EN, Crowell 1899 EN, Crowell c.1911 EN (Delano translation), Ladyschnikow 1912 RU (Berlin), Fontane/Tronin 1900 DE, and Tolstoy’s 1901 Response to the Synod. The French Halpérine-Kaminsky 1900 title page and the Tronin/Frapan German title page are cached from Wikimedia Commons PDFs. Four items are provenance-only with no open-access scan: the 1899 Нива serialisation (East View subscription), the Свободное слово 1899–1900 Russian editions (not located open), the Synod Определение №557 in Церковные ведомости №8 1901 (not located open), and the Marks 1900 3rd-edition Russian text (НЭБ viewer only, no open download). The Fontane 1900 DE and the Wikimedia Commons PDF of the same Tronin/Frapan translation are consolidated into one entry.

Rights summary. 66 of 85 distinct entries are openly PD-usable or CC-licensed and cached locally. 19 entries are request-only or not located in open-access form: all 20 Russian museum entries (the pobedonostsev-serov and pobedonostsev-repin entries are merged with their Commons duplicates, reducing the request-only count to 17 pure museum-only items) plus 4 archive provenance records without open scans.

DEDUP NOTES

Six merges applied across channels:

  1. pasternak-res-001 / pasternak-res-016 — same composition (Nekhlyudov waking in bed); two different scans/printings. Canonical entry: pasternak-res-016 (File:1900_The_Awakening.jpg — sharper, titled). Variant: pasternak-res-001 retained as secondary with note.
  2. pasternak-res-003 / pasternak-res-017 — same composition (Katyusha at the dock); two different scans. Canonical entry: pasternak-res-003 (File:Tolsoy-Res-Awake_004.jpg — more detail). Variant: pasternak-res-017 (Awakening_Chapter35.jpg) retained as secondary.
  3. repin-tolstoy-barefoot-1901 / repin-tolstoy-barefoot-google / repin-tolstoy-1901-cropped — all three are the same Repin 1901 painting. Canonical: repin-tolstoy-barefoot-google (Google Art Project, highest resolution). Utility crop retained: repin-tolstoy-1901-cropped. Third file (Tolstoy_by_Repin_1901.jpg) dropped from canonical list but file cached.
  4. pobedonostsev-serov-1902 (photos channel) / RU-PRT-06 (russia channel) — Commons image is a PD reproduction of the ГРМ-held Serov 1902. Merged into single entry; Commons localPath is the usable asset; ГРМ archiveId retained as holding reference.
  5. pobedonostsev-repin-1903 (photos channel) / RU-PRT-03 (russia channel) — Commons image (Pobedonostsev_by_repin.jpg) is a reproduction of the ГРМ study (Ж-4027). Merged into single entry; Commons localPath is the usable asset.
  6. archive-auferstehung00gragoog-* (archive.org scan) / archive-wikimedia-auferstehung-tronin-1900-p1 (Wikimedia PDF) — same Tronin/Frapan Berlin 1900 edition. Single consolidated entry with both localPaths noted.
