Keystone quotes (byte-faithful RU + working EN)

K1 · Preface — the essay’s own emotional genesis

EN (working): “The Franco-Russian festivities that took place in France last October aroused in me — probably as in many people — first a feeling of the comic, then of bewilderment, then of indignation, which I wished to express in a short journal article...”

K2 · Ch I — the absurd premise

RU: «... EN (working): “...all these millions of Russians and Frenchmen suddenly imagined that they somehow specially loved one another — that is, all Frenchmen all Russians, and all Russians all Frenchmen.”

K3 · Ch III — the psychopathic-epidemic frame (Sikorsky)

EN (working): “Recently Professor of Psychiatry Sikorsky described in the Kiev University News what he had investigated and calls a psychopathic epidemic — the malevanshchina — that had appeared in certain villages of the Vasilkov district of Kiev province.”

K4 · Ch III — the difference that makes it dangerous

RU: «... EN (working): “...here it is the madness of millions of people who possess vast sums of money and the means of doing violence to others — rifles, bayonets, fortresses, ironclads, melinite, dynamite — and who, besides, have at their disposal the most powerful means of spreading their madness: the post, the telegraph, an enormous quantity of newspapers...”

K5 · Ch V — the deceived народ as cannon fodder

EN (working): “This deceived one is that same eternally deceived, foolish working people — the very people who with their callused hands built all these ships, fortresses, arsenals... [for whom] there will be only a wet, desolate field, cold, hunger, anguish... blood, wounds, suffering, rotting corpses, and a senseless, useless death.”

K6 · Ch VI — it is all a lie; the lie leads to murder

EN (working): “The devil is a murderer and the father of lies. And the lie always leads to murder. And in this case more obviously than ever.”

K7 · Ch IX — Prokofy: the народ’s own voice

EN (working): “Better come and work with us, and send the German along too. And when we’ve done the work, we’ll make merry. We’ll take the German too. They’re people just the same.”

K8 · Ch X — half a century among the народ, never once saw patriotism

EN (working): “I have lived half a century among the Russian people, and in the great mass of the real Russian people, in all that time, I have not once seen or heard any manifestation or expression of this feeling of patriotism — except for those patriotic phrases learned in military service or repeated out of books...”

K9 · Ch XII — manufactured enthusiasm (the Preobrazhensky drill)

EN (working): “The raptures of a crowd are for the most part artificially prepared by those who need them, and the degree of rapture a crowd displays shows only the degree of skill of the organisers of those raptures.” (Companion detail: the count-off — “...

K10 · Ch XIII — the definition of patriotism

EN (working): “This feeling, in its most exact definition, is nothing other than the preference of one’s own state or people over every other state and people — a feeling fully expressed by the German patriotic song ‘Deutschland, Deutschland über alles’...”

K11 · Ch XIV — patriotism is slavery / every war is provoked by governments

RU: «... EN (working): “...in all of history there is not one war that was not provoked by governments, by governments alone, entirely independently of the interests of the peoples...” EN (working): “Patriotism is slavery.”

K12 · Ch XVII — the remedy: do not lie

EN (working): “It is shameful to say how little is needed for all people to free themselves from all the calamities that now oppress them: one need only not lie.”

K13 · Ch XVIII — the candle; Christ’s peace

RU: «... EN (working): “...this whole seemingly terrible organisation of brute force is nothing before the consciousness of truth arising in the soul of a single person who knows the power of truth — and from that person it will pass to a second, a third, as one candle lights an infinite number of others.” EN (working): “‘Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid’ — said Christ. And this peace is indeed already among us, and it depends on us to acquire it.”

Textual note (encryption visible in published text)

The PSS Tom 39 text (after Elpidin 1895, corrected against MSS) shows the late-redaction encryptions partially: ch. II “епископ в Тулоне” (Mignot’s name removed), ch. I “Генерал такой-то благодарил г-жу такую-то” (Bogdanovich/Adam removed), ch. [агитатор]” (Déroulède removed) — yet Avelan’s name survives by name in ch. I’s quoted newspaper passages. So the de-naming was applied unevenly; good concrete material for the Redactions section (attribute the encryption list to the PSS history, show the surviving result in the text).
