Last modified 10 August 2026 · view source

Diaries swept: primary-sources/tolstoydigital-TEI/texts/diaries/v5[345]_*.xml. All pre-1918; extracted with extract_tei.py --choice=reg --notes=auto. Dates given here are confirmed from each file’s # bibl line; no filename-vs-bibl year mismatch was found in any cited entry. Verbatim Russian is copied from the permanent diary-*.txt extracts in this folder (never retyped); footnote markers (¹ ² ³) are the extractor’s, retained as-is.

Candidate hits

Files where the sweep terms (Хаджи/Мурат, татарник/репей, озорство/стыдно/пустяки/глупости, Кавказ/Шамиль/горцы/черкес, Стасов) land on diary body text bearing on conceiving/writing Hadji Murat. Year is the bibl year (all matched the filename).

Finalists (cited below):

Secondary / not cited as finalists (genuine hits, but tangential to genesis): - v53_102_104_1896_07_30 — «стыдно» but about Tanéyev’s Gospel argument, not the work. - v53_117_117_1896_11_06_2, v53_115_116_1896_11_01 — letters “to the Caucasus disciplinary battalion” (his anti-conscription correspondence) + Stasov as an absent friend; not Hadji-Murat research. - v53_137_137_1897_02_11, v53_176_176_1898_01_04, v54_007_008_1900_01_08 — Stasov visits (he was Tolstoy’s archival helper for the work, but these mentions are social; the 1900 one — «Образцовый тип ума. Как хотелось бы изобразить это» — is Tolstoy wanting to depict Stasov, not Caucasus material). - 1895 Кавказ hits (v53_047_050_1895_08_05, v53_050_053_1895_08_07) — pre-conception; Caucasus appears in other contexts, no Hadji-Murat link.

Finalists

1. The thistle seed — 19 July 1896 (Pirogovo)

File: v53_099_102_1896_07_19 · bibl: Дневник, 19 июля 1896 г. Filename 1896_07_19 = bibl date (match). NB: the entry is written 19 July; the encounter is dated «Вчера иду» (yesterday) → the thistle was seen 18 July 1896, recorded the 19th.

Working EN: “1) Yesterday I walk across the black-earth fallow ploughed for winter wheat. As far as the eye reaches, nothing but black earth — not one green blade. And there, at the edge of the dusty grey road, a clump of Tatar [thistle] (a burdock), three shoots: one broken, its soiled white flower hanging; another broken and spattered with mud, black, the stalk snapped and dirtied; the third shoot sticks out sideways, also black with dust, but still alive and reddening at its centre. — It reminded me of Hadji Murat. I want to write [it]. It defends its life to the last, and alone in the whole field, somehow or other, has held on to it.”

Significance: The genesis keystone. The crushed-but-living thistle becomes the controlling image and direct trigger («Напомнил Хаджи-Мурата. Хочется написать») — the seed the entire dive radiates from. It also names the work’s theme in embryo: defending life to the last, alone.

2. First rough draft — 14 September 1896 (Yasnaya Polyana)

File: v53_105_108_1896_09_14 · bibl: Дневник, 14 сентября 1896 г. (т. 53, с. 105–108). Match.

Working EN: “Wrote about Hadji Murat very badly, in rough.”

Significance: Within two months of the thistle he already has a draft on paper — and is already dissatisfied. Sets the pattern of the whole composition: an idea he keeps returning to and never feels he has got right.

3. Re-read, “not it” — 23 October 1896

File: v53_115_115_1896_10_23 · bibl: Дневник, 23 октября 1896 г. (т. 53, с. 115). Match.

Working EN: “Re-read Hadji Murat, not it. I can’t take up Resurrection. The drama occupies me.”

Significance: Self-rejection of the draft; he names the rivals competing for his attention (Resurrection, the drama). The work goes dormant.

4. The renewed pull — 9 March 1897 (Moscow)

File: v53_143_143_1897_03_09 · bibl: Дневник, 9 марта 1897 г. (т. 53, с. 143). Match.

Working EN: “Very much wanted to write Hadji Murat, and somehow it took shape well — movingly / tenderly.”

Significance: After a winter’s silence the desire returns with warmth (умилительно) — confirms the work pulls on him emotionally, not as duty.

5. The theme + the shame of his own life — 4 April 1897

File: v53_143_145_1897_04_04 · bibl: Дневник, 4 апреля 1897 г. (т. 53, с. 143–145). Match.

Working EN: “I have prayed much of late that my life might be better. As it is, it is shameful and hard from the awareness of the unlawfulness of my life. Yesterday I thought very well about Hadji Murat — that the main thing in him is to express the deceit of faith. How fine he would be were it not for this deceit.”

Significance: Two strands meet in one entry: (a) the thematic core he assigns the work — «обман веры», the deceit/delusion of [Muslim, but also any] faith; (b) his own «стыдно» about the «незаконность» of his life — the renunciation-period self-reproach that shadows the fiction-writing throughout this dive.

6. Concrete sensory details — 14 October 1897

File: v53_152_157_1897_10_14 · bibl: Дневник, 14 октября 1897 г. (т. 53, с. 152–157). Match.

Working EN: “4) Details for Hadji Murat: 1) an eagle’s shadow runs along the mountain slope, 2) by the river, tracks in the sand of beasts, horses, men, 3) entering the forest, the horses snort briskly, 4) out of a держи-дерево [Christ’s-thorn / Paliurus] bush a goat sprang.”

Significance: Shows the craft method — Tolstoy banking discrete Caucasus sense-images for later use. (The держи-дерево thorn-bush echoes the thistle’s defiant survival motif.)

7. Began and stopped, won’t force it — 16 October 1897

File: v53_157_158_1897_10_16 · bibl: Дневник, 16 октября 1897 г. (т. 53, с. 157–158). Match.

Working EN: “Yesterday evening and today I wanted to write Hadji Murat. Began. Something came of it, but I didn’t go on, because I’m not in full possession [of myself / it]. One mustn’t spoil it and force it.”

Significance: His working ethic on the piece — refuses to force it; waits for the right inner state.

8. “Wrote it. Nothing came of it. But it’s clarifying” — 11 November 1897

File: v53_160_160_1897_11_11_2 · bibl: Дневник, 11 ноября 1897 г. (т. 53, с. 160). Match.

Working EN: “From morning wrote Hadji Murat. Nothing came of it. But in my head it’s clarifying. And I want it very much.”

Significance: The push-pull rhythm — failure on the page but progress in conception, sustained desire.

9. The “robber pendant” companion idea — 14 November 1897

File: v53_161_162_1897_11_14 · bibl: Дневник, 14 ноября 1897 г. (т. 53, с. 161–162). Match.

Working EN: “3) Thought of writing, as a pendant to Hadji Murat, another, Russian ‘robber,’ Grigory Nikolaev, so that he would see all the unlawfulness of the rich’s life, living as an apple-watchman on a wealthy estate with a lawn-tennis [court].”

Significance: Hadji Murat conceived as one of a planned pair — the Caucasian rebel mirrored by a Russian “outlaw” who indicts the «незаконность жизни богатых» (the same «незаконность» word he used of his own life on 4 April).

10. Gathering materials, can’t find the tone — 20–21 November 1897

File: v53_164_165_1897_11_21 · bibl: Дневник, 21 ноября 1897 г. (т. 53, с. 164–165). Match.

Working EN: “Alive. I keep thinking over and collecting materials for Hadji Murat. Today thought much, read, began to write, but at once stopped.” (20 Nov: “Thought much about Hadji Murat and prepared materials. Still can’t find the tone.”)

Significance: The research/archival phase — assembling source materials (this is where Stasov’s help belongs), and the recurring problem: «

11. The sujets list — Hadji Murat among the unwritten — 13 December 1897

File: v53_170_171_1897_12_13 · bibl: Дневник, 13 декабря 1897 г. (т. 53, с. 170–171). Match.

Working EN: “At Rusanov’s, the head of Hadji Murat. This morning I wanted to write Hadji Murat. Lost the outline. […] 7) Hadji Murat.” (The entry lists ~13 subjects he might develop — Sergius, Alexander I, the false coupon, Resurrection, etc. — Hadji Murat is #7.)

Significance: Places the work in the crowded queue of late-period projects; “the head of Hadji Murat at Rusanov’s” is a concrete research/material trace.

12. Hunting the satisfying form — 13 January 1898

File: v53_176_178_1898_01_13 · bibl: Дневник, 13 января 1898 г. (т. 53, с. 176–178). Match.

Working EN: “I keep trying to find a satisfying form for Hadji Murat, and still there is none. Though I seem to be getting closer.”

Significance: The formal struggle in one line — the work’s decades-long problem was never the material but the form.

13. The “peepshow” method — 21 March 1898

File: v53_186_189_1898_03_21 · bibl: Дневник, 21 марта 1898 г. (т. 53, с. 186–189). Match.

Working EN: “16) There is such an English toy, a peepshow — under the little glass first one thing is shown, then another. Just so one must show the man Hadji Murat: husband, fanatic, and so on.”

Significance: A precise statement of the multi-faceted characterisation method — show the man from many sides in turn. One of the most-cited craft notes for the work.

14. Named beside the Doukhobors — 12 April 1898

File: v53_189_191_1898_04_12 · bibl: Дневник, 12 апреля 1898 г. (т. 53, с. 189–191). Match.

Working EN: “Among the events of this time were the arrival of the Doukhobors, the cares of their resettlement, the death of Brashnin. Occupations: Carthago delenda est and Hadji Murat.”

Significance: Situates the fiction inside the activist 1898 — Doukhobor resettlement (which Resurrection was being finished to fund) and the anti-militarist Carthago delenda est — Hadji Murat as the “art” he keeps alongside the cause.

15. “Indulged again — stupid, almost a mental illness” — 15 May 1898

File: v53_195_196_1898_05_15 · bibl: Дневник, 15 мая 1898 г. (т. 53, с. 195–196). Match.

Working EN: “Wrote Hadji Murat reluctantly. Again indulged [in it] — stupid, almost a mental illness.”

Significance: The renunciation-conflict at its sharpest in the genesis years: writing fiction framed as a near-pathological self-indulgence («упражнялся… After this the work goes dormant for nearly three years.

16. Resumed “not by desire” — 19 March 1901

File: v54_090_093_1901_03_19 · bibl: Дневник, 19 марта 1901 г. (т. 54, с. 90–93). Match.

Working EN: “In all this time I wrote nothing except the appeal to the Tsar and his helpers, and some changes — all of them bad — in Hadji Murat, which I took up not from desire.”

Significance: The 1901 restart, in the weeks around his excommunication (the appeals to the Tsar/Synod). He frames the return as reluctant — «

17. “Finish Hadji Murat” on the to-do list — 22 April 1901

File: v54_094_096_1901_04_22 · bibl: Дневник, 22 апреля 1901 г. (т. 54, с. 94–96). Match.

Working EN: “But I must: 1) answer letters; 2) write to Posha on education; 3) [an address] to the military; 4) on the absence of religion; 5) finish Hadji Murat. It is all under way, and must be done. And I do nothing.”

Significance: Hadji Murat sits at the bottom of a duty-list dominated by tracts and addresses — the artwork as the last, optional item among the preaching.

18. Craft note — bold shadows/tones — 7 May 1901

File: v54_096_098_1901_05_07 · bibl: Дневник, 7 мая 1901 г. (т. 54, с. 96–98). Match.

Working EN: “For the first time I clearly understood the power that types acquire from boldly laid-on shadows. I’ll do this with Hadji Murat and Marya Dmitrievna.”

Significance: A specific technique he means to apply — chiaroscuro of character (“boldly laid-on shadows”), naming both Hadji Murat and Marya Dmitrievna [Avdeev].

19. The 1902 push — “eagerness, then reluctance and shame” — 5 August 1902

File: v54_134_135_1902_08_05 · bibl: Дневник, 5 августа 1902 г. (т. 54, с. 134–135). Match.

Working EN: “On 22 July I sent off To the Working People, and since then have been writing Hadji Murat, now with eagerness, now with reluctance and shame. […] I got scattered in my thoughts about Hadji Murat. Now it seems I’ve clarified it.”

Significance: The most explicit statement of the dive’s central tension — «то с охотой, то с неохотой и стыдом». The 1902 Gaspra-recovery push (he had nearly died) is when most of the work gets done.

20. “I write Hadji Murat and feel ashamed the whole time” — 8 August 1902

File: v54_135_136_1902_08_08 · bibl: Дневник, 8 августа 1902 г. (т. 54, с. 135–136). Match.

Working EN: “I write Hadji Murat and feel ashamed the whole time.”

Significance: The renunciation-shame at its most compressed and undefended — three days after the “eagerness/reluctance/shame” entry, the shame stands alone.

21. Six weeks straight — 20 August 1902

File: v54_136_137_1902_08_20 · bibl: Дневник, 20 августа 1902 г. (т. 54, с. 136–137). Match.

Working EN: “Haven’t written [in the diary] for a month and a half. All that time I was writing Hadji Murat.”

Significance: Confirms the sustained intensity of the 1902 campaign — the diary itself fell silent because the work absorbed him.

22. Set aside, but craving art — 26 August 1902

File: v54_140_144_1902_08_26 · bibl: Дневник, 26 августа 1902 г. (т. 54, с. 140–144). Match.

Working EN: “Set Hadji Murat aside, and have no desire to go on with To the Clergy — but it’s as if I want to write something artistic.”

Significance: The tension flips: even having put the work down, the artistic appetite reasserts itself against the tract — the shame coexists with genuine creative hunger.

23. “Took it up again… tomorrow I’ll finish” — 30 November 1902

File: v54_149_149_1902_11_30 · bibl: Дневник, 30 ноября 1902 г. (т. 54, с. 149). Match.

Working EN: “Finished the legend, took up Hadji Murat again, and probably, if I live [е.б.ж. = ежели буду жив], will finish tomorrow.”

Significance: A premature “tomorrow I’ll finish” — the work would in fact be reworked for another year-plus.

24. Reached the Nicholas I chapter — 17 May 1903

File: v54_173_174_1903_05_17 · bibl: Дневник, 17 мая 1903 г. (т. 54, с. 173–174). Match.

Working EN: “Corrected Hadji Murat. Reached Nikolai Pavlovich [Nicholas I] and it seems to be clarifying.”

Significance: Marks the genesis of the Nicholas I chapter — the satirical autocrat-portrait that becomes the work’s structural counterweight to Hadji Murat.

25. “The stupid Hadji Murat” — 18 June 1903

File: v54_178_180_1903_06_18 · bibl: Дневник, 18 июня 1903 г. (т. 54, с. 178–180). Match.

Working EN: “All this is far more important than the stupid Hadji Murat.”

Significance: The self-deprecation hardens into dismissal — he ranks the work below the moral/religious “all this.” The shame-strain persists to the end of composition.

26. Last corrections, then abandoned — 4 July 1903 → 25 February 1904

File: v55_015_016_1904_02_25 · bibl: Дневник, 25 февраля 1904 г. (т. 55, с. 15–16). Match.

Working EN: “Today corrected Nikolai Pavlovich in Hadji Murat and abandoned it. If there’s time, I’ll write separately about Nicholas. —”

Significance: The terminal diary note on composition — «бросил» (abandoned/dropped it). After ~7.5 years from the thistle, he leaves the work essentially complete but unpublished; it appeared posthumously in 1912.
