(no stderr warnings, no near-empty outputs). 8 files → 7 distinct works (Restoration of
Hell has two apparatus files: history + manuscript description).
Date convention: all dates in the apparatus are Old Style (Julian) unless explicitly marked “нового стиля” / н. с. For 1901–1908, OS→NS = +13 days. The one 1893 work (Religion and Morality) uses +12 days for OS→NS. NS conversions below are mine; the apparatus itself almost never gives NS. Where the apparatus hedges, I mark it APPROX.
Verbatim-quote rule: every Russian phrase below is copied byte-for-byte from the named
.txt extract in this same folder. The filename precedes each quote block.
1. Reply to the Synod’s Edict (Ответ на определение Синода от 20—22 февраля…), 1901 — THE SPINE
Source extract: v34_575_577_Otvet_na_opredelenie_Sinoda_ot_20_22_fev.txt (PSS vol. 34;
apparatus by A. I. Opulsky).
The Synod’s «Определение» (the edict itself) — promulgation & authorship
- The excommunication had been “conceived by the tsarist government as early as the 1880s” (задумано… The trigger for publishing it was the 1899 appearance of Resurrection, with its satirical Toporov figure aimed at ober-procurator K. P. Pobedonostsev.
- Promulgation date: 24 February 1901 (OS) → 9 March 1901 (NS). First published in «Церковные ведомости при святейшем правительствующем синоде», then reprinted in the general press («Русские ведомости», «Новое время» and others).
(So the edict is dated 20–22 Feb OS = 5–7 March NS; published 24 Feb OS = 9 March NS.)
- Authorship: drafted by Pobedonostsev, edited/revised by Metropolitan Antony of St. Petersburg and Ladoga (Antoniy) and other Synod members, and approved by Nicholas II.
v34_575_577_Otvet_na_opredelenie_Sinoda_ot_20_22_fev.txt: «24 февраля 1901 г.
The wave of letters (the immediate trigger for the Reply)
- The excommunication “evoked many extremely varied, but chiefly sympathetic, letters to Tolstoy” — and these letters were the spur to writing the Reply.
Note: the apparatus does NOT mention Sofia Tolstaya’s protest letter to Metropolitan Antony, nor any specific street/public reaction beyond “the letters.” Those facts are NOT in this apparatus — flag as silent here; will need a separate source.
Composition
- Draft ready (вчерне) 24 March 1901 (OS) → 6 April (NS).
- Copy of 26 March (OS) — Tolstoy added clarifications about the letters and the Synod ruling.
- Three further copies — 29, 30, and probably 31 March (OS) — more corrections/additions.
- Work noted in his Diary 28 and 31 March (t. 54).
- Finished 4 April 1901 (OS) → 17 April (NS). On 4 April he wrote to Chertkov: “Today I finished the reply to the Synod and to those who wrote to me on this occasion.” He judged it better than “To the Tsar and His Assistants.” Manuscript dates by Tolstoy: ms.
- Titling evolved across mss (see №1 “Моим скрывающим свое имя корреспондентам обвинителям”; №5 “Ответ моим корреспондентам”, with struck-through variants incl. “Ответ Синоду”; №7 the final long title).
- 9 April 1901 (OS) → 22 April (NS): P. A. Boulanger sent the Reply to Chertkov for publication.
First publication (the truncated Russian first appearance)
- The St. Petersburg church journal «Миссионерское обозрение», wanting to boost subscriptions, printed the Reply — but with about 100 lines of the sharpest passages cut. Printed in «Миссионерское обозрение» 1901, no. 6, pp. 806–814; reprinted in the collection «По поводу отпадения от православной церкви графа Льва Николаевича Толстого» (sb. of «Миссионерское обозрение» articles, izd. V. M. Skvortsov, SPb. 1901). Further reprinting was forbidden by the spiritual (ecclesiastical) censorship. (Telegram exchange 20–23 May 1901 with the journal documented; Tolstoy: “I confess I would very much like them to print my reply.”)
First complete publication (abroad) & first complete-in-Russia
- Full text first printed abroad by Chertkov in «Листки Свободного слова» 1901, № 22, and reprinted by a number of other foreign publishers.
- First COMPLETE appearance in Russia: in Andreevich’s monograph «Л. Н. Толстой» (izd. A. E. Belyaev, SPb. 1905, pp. 229–234).
- 1906: issued as a separate brochure by «Обновление».
- 1911: included in part 20 of the 12th edition of Tolstoy’s «Сочинения» (the edition S. A. Tolstaya was issuing).
А. Е. 229—234).»
Ban / censorship events
- Spiritual censorship ban on further reprinting of the (already truncated) text after the «Миссионерское обозрение» appearance — 1901 (exact date not given). Scope: prohibition of further reprints in Russia.
- Moscow Court Chamber (Московская судебная палата) ruling, 19 April 1911 (OS) → 2 May (NS): the article — among thirty others — was cut out (вырезана) of the 1911 vol. 20 of the collected works.
v34_575_577_Otvet_na_opredelenie_Sinoda_ot_20_22_fev.txt: «По постановлению Московской судебной палаты 19 апреля 1911 г.
Reception facts in the apparatus
- The chief documented “reception” is the mass of (mostly sympathetic) letters Tolstoy received (above), which prompted the Reply.
- Lenin’s 1910 obituary essay «Л. Н. Толстой» is quoted on the excommunication (“Святейший синод отлучил Толстого от церкви. Тем лучше…”) — but this is later Soviet framing, not 1901 reception.
- 1917: the article appeared “в четырех различных изданиях” (four different editions).
- No translations, print runs, or Sofia-Tolstaya protest mentioned in this apparatus.
2. To the Clergy (К духовенству), 1902
Source extract: v34_588_589_K_duhovenstvu_Istorija_pisanija_i_pechat.txt (PSS vol. 34;
apparatus by N. K. Gudziy).
Composition
- Title first noted by Tolstoy in his “Calendar notebook” 23 February 1902 (OS) → 8 March (NS) among six planned themes; again 21 March 1902 in a Notebook; a note 24 March.
- 29 June 1902: named “Обращение к духовенству” among started/planned works in a letter to brother Sergei. 30 July 1902 to same: “I want to write To the Clergy. Let them not understand, but I want to show people the terrible harm they do.”
- 20 September 1902 (OS): “I want to start To the Clergy.”
- Begun 23 September 1902 (OS) → 6 October (NS) (noted in calendar and Diary).
- 25 Sept–19 Oct: near-daily work. 19 October: “Wrote decently. Finished To the Clergy in draft.”
- 22 October: finished a reworking despite illness. From 23 October a third reworking.
- 31 October 1902 (OS) → 13 November (NS): reworking entries stop; finished. Tolstoy then turned to the legend Restoration of Hell (meant to “illustrate” To the Clergy). On the same day he wrote of finishing the article to T. L. Sukhotina, P. I. Birukov, A. Škarvan, and E. E. Lazarev.
- Sent to Chertkov in England for publication ~8 November 1902 (OS) → ~21 November (NS).
- Continued editing after sending: insertion written night of 8 December; another dictated 12 December; inserts copied 10, 13, 25 December; 16 December entered the dictated inserts; 17 December telegram to Chertkov announcing dispatch of changes (sent slightly later).
Manuscript dates by Tolstoy: №28 “18 окт. 1902. Я. П.”; №30 “28 окт. 1902”; №35 “1 ноября 1902 г. Ясная Поляна.”
Title discrepancy (matters for the workRecord)
- Tolstoy’s own only hand-written title (on ms. №1) is «К духовенству»; Chertkov published it in 1903 as «Обращение к духовенству». PSS restores “К духовенству.”
v34_588_589_K_duhovenstvu_Istorija_pisanija_i_pechat.txt: «В 1903 г.
First publication (abroad) & first-in-Russia
- First published 1903, «Свободное слово» (Chertkov, England), as «Обращение к духовенству».
- Also reprinted 1903 by Hugo Steinitz’s publishing house in Berlin
- First in Russia: 1906, reprinted (as «Обращение к духовенству») from the «Свободное слово» edition by the publisher «Обновление».
- 1918: appeared in Moscow in two editions — «Звезды», and jointly «Посредник» + «Свободная жизнь».
- The apparatus notes it had not been included in any collected-works edition of Tolstoy up to the time of this PSS volume (1952).
v34_588_589_K_duhovenstvu_Istorija_pisanija_i_pechat.txt: «В 1903 г.
Ban / censorship
- This apparatus gives no explicit ban event for To the Clergy (no censorship committee ruling named). The 1906 Russian appearance is simply a reprint; the 1903 émigré-first / 1918 Soviet-era Russian editions imply de-facto suppression, but the apparatus does not state a formal ban. Flag as silent on bans.
Reception facts in the apparatus
- None stated (no translations, print runs, or named reactions). Chertkov proposed three minor text changes (6 Dec NS letter); Tolstoy accepted two (3 Dec OS). No reception data otherwise.
3. Restoration of Hell (Разрушение ада и восстановление его), 1902–1903 — legend
Source extracts: v34_546_547_Razrushenie_ada_i_vosstanovlenie_ego_Ist.txt (history; A. I.
Opulsky) and v34_548_549_Razrushenie_ada_i_vosstanovlenie_ego_Opi.txt (manuscript description).
Composition
- Conceived as an “illustration” to To the Clergy. Source: a legend told to Tolstoy by the folk reciter V. P. Shchegolyonok in 1879.
- Begun 1 November 1902 (OS) → 14 November (NS), the day after finishing To the Clergy (31 Oct). Calendar 1 Nov: “Писал легенду.”
- 8 Nov 1902 to Chertkov: “I am now writing a legend about the devil, which should serve as an illustration to To the Clergy.” Near-continuous work through November.
- 17 Nov 1902: “Now, it seems, I’ve finished about the devils.” 19 Nov calendar: “seems finished.” 30 Nov Diary: “finished the legend.” But corrections continued: M. L. Obolenskaya’s notes record reworking 20–23 December (esp. the chapter “о науке” / on science).
- Work finished late December 1902 or first days of January 1903; manuscript then sent to Chertkov in England for publication.
- Further corrections after dispatch: 11 Jan 1903 (addition to the legend); 29 Jan 1903 telegram (further addition); 31 Jan 1903 to I. M. Tregubov (third variant of the end of ch. VII); 5 Feb 1903 telegram (fix ch. II: “не беззубый, но безусый”); 14–15 Feb 1903 — Chertkov proposed changes to ch. VIII, Tolstoy declined (kept the word “христианское” in the devil’s mouth). 7 March 1903 to Chertkov: better to print the Legend and To the Clergy “совершенно отдельно” — “Тон различный.”
Manuscript-description titles evolved: autograph title «Легенда о сошествии Христа во ад и восстановлении царства дьявола» → «Восстановление ада» → final «Разрушение ада и восстановление его».
v34_546_547_Razrushenie_ada_i_vosstanovlenie_ego_Ist.txt: «Работа над легендой была закончена в конце декабря 1902 г.
First publication (abroad) & first-in-Russia
«Свободное слово» under Chertkov’s editorship, № 81; «Листки для народа» № 3, 1903, Christchurch, England.
- First appeared in Russia only in 1917 (izd. «Посредник» and others).
v34_546_547_Razrushenie_ada_i_vosstanovlenie_ego_Ist.txt: «Впервые легенда появилась в 1903 г. «Листки для народа», № 3, 1903, Christchurch, England).»
Ban / censorship — the rich arc (three blocked Russian attempts)
- 21 February 1906 (OS) → 6 March (NS): the publisher «Ясная Поляна» (Maksimov) submitted proof galleys to the censor; the censor’s report ruled «К напечатанию не дозволять» (not to be permitted for printing). [St. Petersburg Censorship Committee.]
- 1910: the legend was printed by «Обновление» («Восстановление ада. Без пропусков.», № 19) — but the Committee on Press Affairs (Комитет по делам печати) placed it under arrest and petitioned the prosecutor of the St. Petersburg Court Chamber to bring a criminal prosecution against the publisher’s representative N. E. Felten.
- 1913: the volume of the collected works in the «Просвещение» edition (ed. A. M. Khiryakov, series II, vol. 5), which included the legend, was printed — and the Committee on Press Affairs ruled to place the book under arrest.
v34_546_547_Razrushenie_ada_i_vosstanovlenie_ego_Ist.txt: «21 февраля 1906 г.
(Apparatus note for the proposal: the 1910 «Обновление» imprint carries “1906” on its title-line «Кн-во «Обновление», № 19, 1906» but the apparatus dates the printing/arrest to 1910.)
Reception facts in the apparatus
- None as such (no translations or reactions named). The “reception” here is the censorship arc: three successive Russian attempts (1906, 1910, 1913) all blocked, prosecution sought once (Felten).
4. On Religious Tolerance (О веротерпимости), 1901
Source extract: v34_586_587_O_veroterpimosti_Istorija_pisanija_i_pec.txt (PSS vol. 34;
apparatus by N. D. Pokrovskaya).
Composition
- Occasion: a speech by M. A. Stakhovich (Oryol provincial marshal of nobility) at the missionary congress in September 1901 in Oryol, advocating freedom of conscience.
- 13 Oct 1901: M. L. Obolenskaya reports the speech’s impression on Tolstoy. 24 Oct 1901 Diary: intends to write “о праве иметь отношение с богом, по случаю речи Стаховича.”
- First draft probably ~early November 1901; Tolstoy dissatisfied, didn’t give it to be copied.
- New version written 10 December 1901 (OS) → 23 December (NS) (ms. №2 dated “10 дек. 1901 г.”). Continuous work thereafter.
- 18 December (OS) → 31 December (NS): date on last leaf marking completion (ms. But work continued: 23 Dec he initialed a newly-written conclusion; 24 Dec signed again (ms. 1901. Гаспра”); 27 Dec (ms. Гаспра”); 28 December 1901 (OS) → 10 January 1902 (NS): main work finished (ms. 1901”).
- 1 Jan 1902: “Поправил о веротерпимости” — corrections entered into the 28 Dec ms., then sent to Chertkov for publication. (Written at Gaspra, Crimea.)
v34_586_587_O_veroterpimosti_Istorija_pisanija_i_pec.txt: «Новый вариант статьи был написан 10 декабря.
First publication (abroad) & first-in-Russia
- First published 1902, «Свободное слово» (Chertkov, England), № 72.
- Early February 1902 (while gravely ill) Tolstoy dictated additions to chs. III, IV, V to Boulanger; Chertkov printed these on pp. 13–16 as «Поправки и дополнения»; in the 2nd «Свободное слово» edition the same year they were folded into the text.
- First in Russia: 1906, in the «Всемирный вестник» edition; then in part 19 of the 12th edition of «Сочинения Л. Н.
- 1917: reprinted as a separate brochure in two editions («Звезды» and «Посредник»).
v34_586_587_O_veroterpimosti_Istorija_pisanija_i_pec.txt: «Статья появилась в 1902 г. Н.
Ban / censorship
- No explicit ban event named in this apparatus. The émigré-first (1902) → Russia-1906 pattern implies suppression, but no formal censorship-committee ruling or arrest is stated. Flag as silent on bans.
Reception facts in the apparatus
- None named (no reactions, translations, print runs). The only reception-adjacent material is Lenin’s later commentary on the «Московские ведомости» response to Stakhovich’s speech (quoted as Soviet framing, not 1901–02 reception of Tolstoy’s own article).
5. Religion and Morality (Религия и нравственность), 1893
Source extract: v39_225_228_Religija_i_nravstvennost_Istorija_pisani.txt (PSS vol. 39).
NOTE: this is the only 1893 work here → OS→NS = +12 days.
Composition
- Occasion: a letter (dated 6 August 1893 N.S.) from Georg von Gizycki (G. von Gizicki, 1851–1895), Berlin philosophy professor, asking on behalf of the journal «Für Ethische Kultur» two questions: (1) what Tolstoy means by “religion”; (2) whether a morality independent of religion is possible.
- Work begun soon after receiving the letter. First-redaction date in ms. 1893” (OS) → 26 August (NS).
- 23 Aug Diary: “Пытаюсь писать о религии, но не идет.” More intensive in September. 18 September: second redaction finished (ms. №16 dated “18 сентября 1893”). 5 Oct Diary: “Как будто кончил.”
- Further work through October (ms. №18 “17 октября 1893”; ms. Finished ~30 October 1893 (OS) → ~11 November (NS) (30 Oct: told Chertkov & S.A. “кончил”; 3 Nov Diary “Я кончил о религии”).
- Complication: Birukov, publishing in PSS-1913 vol. XV, placed at the end the date “28 октября 1898 г.” — the YEAR is an error (the apparatus states this twice: “год указан ошибочно”). The real later signed ms. (28 October, 1893) did not survive; Birukov’s text is fuller than the surviving ms. №23.
v39_225_228_Religija_i_nravstvennost_Istorija_pisani.txt: «П. И. № 23.»
First publication — foreign editions FIRST (German), then English, then Russian
- First published in German, serialized in «Für Ethische Kultur» (nos. 52 & 53 of 1893; nos. 1 & 3 of 1894), translated by S. Yu. Ber; Tolstoy received all 4 issues by early Jan 1894.
- English: same year (1894), translated by Chertkov & Battersby, “Religion and Morality. A reply to two questions put by the German Ethical Society” (Contemporary Review, March 1894).
- In Russian first published in «Северный вестник» (1894, January) — with large censorship cuts and distortions, and a title changed by the editors to «Противоречия эмпирической нравственности».
Ban / censorship event (datable)
- A separate (standalone) edition was banned by circular of the Main Directorate for Press Affairs (Главное управление по делам печати), 19 September 1894 (OS) → 1 October (NS), no. 5412. The first standalone edition appeared only in «Посредник» in 1908 (journal text, but under the authorial title).
Publication-history note for collected works
- Collected eds. 1895 (ch. XIV), 1897 (ch. XIV), 1903 (ch. XIII), 1911 (ch. XIV) all reprinted the censored journal text (authorial title restored). The full uncensored text appeared first in PSS-1913 vol. XV (Birukov), from the lost ms. dated 28 Oct (year mis-stated as 1898).
Reception facts in the apparatus
- Translations are the main “reception” (German serialization + separate ed.; English Contemporary Review). No print runs or named individual reactions beyond Gizycki’s commission. Chertkov proposed 12 textual corrections (in connection with the English translation); Tolstoy accepted most.
6. How to Read the Gospels
Source extract: v39_241_241_Kak_chitat_evangelie_i_v_chem_ego_suschn.txt (PSS vol. 39;
apparatus by V. S. Mishin).
Composition
- 4 July 1896 (OS) to S. I. Kobelev: that summer he had been underlining in the Gospels “что совсем просто и понятно,” skipping what could be variously interpreted.
- 19 July 1896 Diary (month-summary): “wrote a preface to reading the Gospel and marked up the Gospels.”
- Two manuscripts: an autograph titled «В чем сущность учения Христа», signed/dated by Tolstoy “21 и.”; a copy by P. I. Birukov, heavily corrected, retitled by Birukov «Как читать Евангелие?», dated by Birukov “21 июня 1896 г.”
- Date dispute resolved by PSS: Chertkov’s edition dated it 22 July 1896; PSS corrects the month to June (reasoning: Tolstoy would not, a month after finishing, have made almost no corrections on review). So composition ≈ late June 1896 (OS). Mark this APPROX / contested: the manuscript month-letter is ambiguous (“21 и.” = 21 ию[ня/ля]), the Chertkov print says July, PSS argues June.
v39_241_241_Kak_chitat_evangelie_i_v_chem_ego_suschn.txt: «В изд. В.
First publication
- First published in V. Chertkov’s edition, London, 1897 (under the title «

7. The Teaching of Christ for Children / The Teaching of Christ Set Forth for Children
Source extract: v37_433_434_Uchenie_Hrista_izlozhennoe_dlja_detej_Is.txt (PSS vol. 37;
apparatus by N. N. Gusev).
Composition
- Begun 23 February 1907 (OS) → 8 March (NS) (work of setting forth the Gospel for children).
- 2 March: decided to drop it and limit himself to revising «Круг чтения»; 3 March: “Wanted to leave the Gospel — impossible.” Work continued 13, 15, 21, 22, 26, 28, 29, 31 March and 3, 4 April 1907.
- 5 April 1907 (OS) → 18 April (NS): “finished everything in draft” (“кончил всё начерно”). But dissatisfied (13, 15 April notes). Work continued to 25 April 1907; then a break (no traces until 14 June 1907). Resumed in June, then broke off again until 31 January 1908, when he revised the children’s Gospel exposition “по желанию милой Марии Александровны Шмидт” (M. A. Shmidt) before handing part 1 to I. I. Gorbunov-Posadov for publication.
- Mid-March 1908: reviewed and handed over part 2 (letter to Gorbunov-Posadov 11 March; notebook 21 March).
- Three sets of proof galleys with heavy correction, done before 17 June 1908. 17 June Diary: corrected proofs with Nikolaev at M. A. Shmidt’s. (Galley stamps from I. N. Kushnerev’s press: 13 March, 3 and 8 April 1908.)
v37_433_434_Uchenie_Hrista_izlozhennoe_dlja_detej_Is.txt: «Работу по изложению евангелия для детей Толстой начал 23 февраля 1907 г. 184). 189).»
First publication
- First published 1908, in the «Посредник» edition (№ 717). PSS reproduces this first-printed text.
- This is a RUSSIAN first publication (Posrednik, the Moscow imprint) — so for this work the foreign- first / Russia-later pattern of the banned works does NOT apply; it was printed in Russia in 1908.
v37_433_434_Uchenie_Hrista_izlozhennoe_dlja_detej_Is.txt: «Впервые “Учение Христа, изложенное для детей” было опубликовано, в 1908 г.
Ban / censorship
- None named in this apparatus. (No censorship-committee ruling or arrest recorded for this children’s exposition.) Flag as silent.
Reception facts in the apparatus
- None named (no translations, print runs, or reactions). Internal note only: based on/revised alongside the «Краткое изложение евангелия» (ms. №14 is a printed copy of that work, izd. «Посредник»/«Обновление» 1906, marked up for the children’s exposition).

Extraction warnings / silences to carry forward
- All 8 files extracted cleanly; no
--notes=forcere-run needed. - The Reply-to-Synod apparatus is silent on Sofia Tolstaya’s protest letter to Metropolitan Antony and on any street/public reaction beyond “the letters” — do NOT source those from here.
- “To the Clergy,” “On Religious Tolerance,” “How to Read the Gospels,” and “Teaching of Christ for Children” carry no explicit ban event in their apparatus (émigré-first publication ≠ a recorded formal ban). Only Reply-to-Synod, Restoration of Hell, and Religion and Morality have datable ban events.
- “How to Read the Gospels”: no Russian first-publication is given, and the composition month is contested (Chertkov “22 July 1896” vs PSS “June 1896”); treat the June reading as PSS’s argued correction, not certain.
- “Religion and Morality”: Birukov’s “28 октября 1898” date is a known YEAR error (apparatus flags it twice) — the real signing was 28 October 1893; the source ms. is lost.
