Preface to Edward Carpenter's article «Modern Science»

Last modified 10 August 2026 · view source

Tolstoy, 1897–98, PSS Tom 31, pp. 87–95.

Close-read deliverable for the Art & aesthetics satellites dive. Sits beside What Is Art? (1897–98; record id what-is-art). This is the SCIENCE side of the WIA argument: Tolstoy prefaces the Russian translation of Edward Carpenter’s «Modern Science: A Criticism», endorses Carpenter’s attack on the pretensions of experimental science, and extends it into a positive claim — true science is the knowledge of how people should live.

1. Composition window

The TEI header year (PSS, 1954) is the publication date of this 90-volume edition, NOT composition. Pinned from the commentary (история писания):

OS → NS offset. 1896/1897/1898 are 19th-century dates, so the Julian (OS) calendar runs 12 days behind Gregorian (NS) — confirmed by Kenworthy’s dual-dated letter “10/22 октября 1896 г.” (OS 10 Oct = NS 22 Oct). The preface’s writing therefore spans OS 21 Oct – 28 Nov 1897 = NS 2 Nov – 10 Dec 1897, with the dating supplement at OS 16 Feb 1898 = NS 28 Feb 1898. Composition window: late October–November 1897, completed February 1898.

Occasion. The preface was commissioned for the Russian translation of Carpenter’s «Modern Science», prepared for the journal «Северный вестник» (Severny Vestnik / “The Northern Herald”). The journal’s publisher, L. Ya. Gurevich, asked Tolstoy for the preface in a letter of 25 April 1897.

2. Genesis & the people

Name Role wiki person?
Edward Carpenter (1844–1929) English socialist writer; author of «Modern Science: A Criticism» and the collection «Civilisation: its cause and cure». The article Tolstoy prefaces and endorses. Central entity. Likely MISSING — verify vault (loose-match transliterations: Карпентер / Эдуард Карпентер / “Edward Carpenter”)
D. Kenworthy (John Coleman Kenworthy) English Tolstoyan; the intermediary who sent Carpenter’s collection to Tolstoy at Carpenter’s request (Oct 1896) and relayed Tolstoy’s thanks. Verify vault (Kenworthy / Кенворти)
S. L. Tolstoy (Sergei Lvovich Tolstoy, eldest son) Translator of «Modern science» into Russian, at Tolstoy’s suggestion. Declined to put his name on it; the journal therefore credited the translation “под редакцией Л. Н. Толстого” (“edited by L. N. Tolstoy”), which led some later publishers to wrongly ascribe the whole translation to Tolstoy himself. Almost certainly PRESENT (vault has the children)
L. Ya. Gurevich (Lyubov Gurevich) Publisher of «Северный вестник»; received the translation “с радостью” and requested the preface (25 April 1897). Verify vault
A. L. Volynsky (Flekser) (Akim Volynsky / Flekser) Editor of «Северный вестник»; visited Yasnaya Polyana 29 July 1897, chased the agreed preface (17 Oct 1897), handled the proofs, and added the Greek epigraph. Verify vault
S. A. Tolstaya (Sofya Andreevna, wife) Blocked publication in «Северный вестник» (objected when she learned of it, 30 Nov 1897), forcing the recall; two months later relented under pressure from her elder children and herself published the preface in part 15 of her Collected Works edition (1898). PRESENT
A. P. Ivanov Copyist for most of the manuscripts (rук. №№ 2–7, 10, 11). Scribe — probably not a vault entity
E. I. Popov Transcribed Tolstoy’s heavy proof corrections (rук. № 12). Verify vault (Evgeny Popov, a Tolstoyan)
D. P. Makovitsky Reported the dispatch of the preface to S. A. Tolstaya (30 Nov 1897), triggering her protest. PRESENT (Tolstoy’s physician/diarist)

Note: Karl Marx is named once in the text, but as a label for the dominant school of political economy («Политическая экономия, наиболее распространенная (Маркс)»), not as a correspondent — a critique-target, not a genesis person.

3. Keystone passages (7)

All Russian substrings copied byte-exact from v31_087_095...txt. Translations labelled “(working English)”.

3.1 — Praise of Carpenter; why the article matters for Russia

(working English) “I think that the present article by Carpenter on modern science may be especially useful in our Russian society, in which, more than in any other European society, there is spread and rooted the superstition that for the good of mankind there is no need at all to spread true religious and moral knowledge, but only to study the experimental sciences.”

Significance: The opening endorsement. Tolstoy names the target as a суеверие (superstition) — equating faith in experimental science with religious superstition — and frames the Russian intelligentsia as its worst case.

3.2 — The false method: explaining the higher by the lower

(working English) “Besides, Carpenter points out that the method of science — consisting in explaining phenomena that are near to us and important to us by means of more remote phenomena indifferent to us — is a false method, one that can never lead to the desired results.”

Significance: States Carpenter’s core charge (the reductionist method) in Tolstoy’s own summary — the experimental sciences explain the meaningful by the meaningless.

3.3 — True science = the knowledge of how to live (the religious-science test)

(working English) “People must live. And in order to live, they must know how to live. And all people have always — well or badly — learned this and, in accordance with this knowledge, lived and moved forward; and this knowledge of how people should live has, since the times of Moses, Solon, and Confucius, always been considered a science, the very science of sciences. And only in our time has it come to be thought that the science of how to live is no science at all, and that real science is only experimental science, beginning with mathematics and ending with sociology.”

Significance: THE positive claim — the religious-science twin of the religious-art test. True science is the knowledge of how to live; experimental science has usurped its place. This is the keystone for the EXTENDS hypothesis (§5).

3.4 — Science answers the wrong questions (“how many miles to the sun”)

(working English) “It triumphantly announces to him how many millions of miles from the sun to the earth, how many millions of ether-vibrations per second for light and how many air-vibrations for sound; it tells of the chemical composition of the Milky Way, of the new element helium, of microorganisms and their excretions, of those points on the hand where electricity is concentrated, of X-rays and the like.”

Significance: The “trivia” charge made concrete — modern science studies spectacular minutiae while the working man asks only «как жить». (Helium and X-rays date the indictment to the 1890s frontier of physics.)

3.5 — Science studies not what is needed but what serves the upper classes (the false-art parallel)

(working English) “So that in reality the people of experimental science do not study everything, as they imagine and assert, but what is more profitable and easier to study. And it is more profitable to study what may contribute to the well-being of those upper classes to which the people engaged in science belong; and it is easier to study everything that is not living.”

Significance: The exact structural twin of the WIA charge against art: science (like upper-class art) selects its objects to serve the leisured class that funds it, then disguises that selection as the neutral law «наука для науки». This is the load-bearing parallel for the dive.

3.6 — False science = false art: both prop up the existing order

(working English) “But all those sciences that aim to make human life kinder and happier — the religious, moral, and social sciences — are not regarded as sciences by the reigning science, and are handed over to theologians, philosophers, jurists, historians, and political economists, who are occupied solely with proving, under the guise of scientific research, that the existing order of life — by whose advantages they profit — is the very one that ought to exist.”

Significance: The “counterfeit priesthood” charge in the science register: the moral sciences are exiled, and what remains justifies the status quo. (Marx-school political economy is named just after as the most fashionable case.)

3.7 — The remedy: science must return to “how people should live”

(working English) “Our science, in order to become science and really be useful rather than harmful to mankind, must first of all renounce its experimental method — by which it regards its task as merely the study of what is — and return to the one reasonable and fruitful understanding of science, by which its subject is the study of how people should live.”

Significance: The closing prescription, mirroring WIA’s demand that art renounce the pursuit of pleasure for the transmission of religious feeling. The study of «что есть» is permitted only insofar as it serves the study of «как должны жить люди».

(Bonus / division-of-labour & specialisation critique — Carpenter quoted directly, available if an eighth is wanted:)

(working English) “Every science, he says, explains the phenomena it investigates, so far as possible, by notions of a lower order. Thus ethics is reduced to questions of utility and inherited habits; from political economy all notions of justice between people are removed.” — This is Tolstoy quoting Carpenter verbatim (the only block-quote in the preface), the source of the reductionist-ladder image (ethics → utility → biology → cells → atoms → mechanics).

4. Publication & translation

5. Triangulation note

Hypothesis: EXTENDS the WIA doctrine to science — the religious-science twin of the religious-art test. Supported.

The preface runs the WIA argument-structure across the science/art boundary almost beam for beam:

WIA (art) Carpenter preface (science)
Real art transmits religious feeling (how to live, felt) Real science is the knowledge of how to live (§3.3, §3.7)
Upper-class art counterfeits this, serving the leisured class’s pleasure Experimental science studies what is “profitable” to the upper classes it belongs to (§3.5)
A “priesthood” of critics/artists certifies the counterfeit as the only real art A reigning science exiles the moral sciences and certifies trivia as the only real science (§3.6)
Religion supplies the standard of what feeling is worth transmitting Religion («общее понимание людьми смысла и цели жизни») supplies the standard of what is worth studying

Tolstoy makes the parallel explicit, not just structural: §3.6 lists the moral/social sciences as the exiled real ones exactly as WIA lists the suppressed real art; the funding-determines-object mechanism in §3.5 is the same “art serves whoever pays” mechanism. The “religious-science test” the prompt hypothesised is literally stated: a science is true to the degree it studies «как должны жить люди».

Where the case STRAINS the theory. Two seams.

  1. Reduction vs. counterfeit — a borrowed argument, not a parallel one. WIA’s case against bad art is that it transmits the wrong feeling (pleasure, not religious feeling). Carpenter’s case against bad science (§3.2, the block-quote in 3.x) is a different charge — a methodological one: explaining the higher by the lower never explains the higher. That argument is Carpenter’s epistemology, not Tolstoy’s aesthetics, and Tolstoy imports it. So the preface fuses two distinct critiques: Carpenter’s “the reductive method fails on its own terms” and Tolstoy’s “science serves the wrong class / asks the wrong question.” The first half (§§3.1–3.2, the block-quote) is summary of Carpenter; the WIA-twin proper only starts at §3.3 («Людям надо жить»), where Tolstoy explicitly says «не предрешая вопроса» — bracketing Carpenter’s epistemology to switch to his own moral indictment. The move is therefore partly forced: the religious-science test is bolted onto a borrowed methodological critique that does not itself depend on the art theory.

  2. “Why does science study trivia?” — the doctrine answers it twice, and the answers compete. Tolstoy gives the lantern image (§43, «Как фонарь не может освещать всего») to argue science must select, and only religion can supply the selection-principle — a clean transfer of the WIA standard. But §3.5 gives a second, more cynical answer: science studies what is profitable and easy («не живое»). The first answer is structural (no religion → no priorities → chaos); the second is venal (self-interest of the scientist-class). WIA leans on the venal answer for art; here Tolstoy needs both, and they sit in tension — is false science a value-blindness (fixable by religion) or a class interest (fixable only by changing the social order)? The preface does not reconcile them.

Verdict for the dive: the preface is the strongest single piece of evidence that the WIA religious-art test has a deliberate religious-science twin — Tolstoy wrote them in the same months and built them on the same frame. But the science case is not a clean clone: it carries Carpenter’s independent methodological argument as ballast, and its diagnosis of why science goes wrong oscillates between a religion-shaped answer and a class-shaped one. The boundary holds, but the join shows.

Prepared as a sub-step of the “Art & aesthetics satellites” corpus-dive. quoteRu substrings are byte-faithful to the extract; a script verifies this. Editorial/genesis claims are attributed to the PSS Tom 31 commentary (Gusev & Pestova, история писания / описание рукописей).
