Source: photographs of Johan’s three physical Swedish books (Första delen 1, Första delen 2, Andra delen), Norstedt edition, supplied at end-of-day-1 of the editions research project. Original folder: /Users/johanedlund/Desktop/Biryukov\ /. Copies in photos/.
Status: photo-set mapping started this session, IMG_0596 + 0596dating + 0597–0605 + 0610 + 0615 + 0620 + 0625 + 0630 + 0635 + 0640 + 0647 examined. Full transcription work pending — next session. The big findings from the sample are summarised below so the verdict can be sharpened immediately on resume.
Photo-set structure (inferred from sample)
The 51 photos appear to follow the natural reading order: Första delen häfte 1 (book 1), then häfte 2 (book 2), then Andra delen. For each book the photographs probably cover, in order: title-page recto → verso (year + printer) → preface(s) → some sample body pages → table of contents (Innehåll) → colophon. The “IMG_0596dating.jpeg” naming pattern suggests Johan flagged specific photos as the year-bearing verso for each book.
Probable mapping (to verify by reading the remaining ~40 photos): - Första delen häfte 1: IMG_0596–0613 (title page + dating + Inledning + early body) - Första delen häfte 2: IMG_0615–~0625 (the soft-cover wrapper at 0615 marks the start; “Senare häftet” subtitle confirms) - Andra delen: IMG_0620+ shows the dating verso for Andra delen (year 1909); the rest of the Andra delen photos run from there to the colophon
The mapping needs full-pass confirmation next session — current sample-based inference, not verified.
Decisive bibliographic findings from the sample
1. Russian Vol I = 1906, not 1905 (settles §1.8 open question)
IMG_0596: Första delen title page — identical layout to Andra delen, with “FÖRSTA DELEN” in place of “ANDRA DELEN.”
IMG_0596dating: Title-page verso of Första delen, showing through-paper from the back. Bottom of the verso reads:
STOCKHOLM KUNGL. BOKTRYCKERIET. P. A. NORSTEDT & SÖNER 1906
The Swedish Första delen was printed in 1906 by Kungl. Boktryckeriet (the Royal Printing House — Sweden’s highest-status printer, royal court and academic work). Since the Swedish edition is the authorised translation from the Russian original, and the translation was made contemporaneously with the Russian Vol I (Tolstoy reviewing in person, per the Vol I preface), this fixes Russian Vol I = 1906.
The az.lib.ru / Russian Wikipedia “[1905]” tag is therefore confirmed as a cataloguing artifact (probably the year the Posrednik series started, or the filename-prefix anchor — not the Vol I book’s actual publication year). §1.8 first open question resolved.
2. Swedish Andra delen printed 1909 (Russian Vol II still 1908)
IMG_0620: Title-page verso of Andra delen, showing through-paper:
STOCKHOLM KUNGL. BOKTRYCKERIET. P. A. NORSTEDT & SÖNER 1909
The Swedish Andra delen was therefore printed in 1909 — one year after Birukoff signed the Slutord on 27 August 1908 in Ivanovskoye. The Russian Vol II first edition is dated 1908. The one-year lag between Russian and Swedish is consistent with translation production time and publishing scheduling. The Slutord’s “27 augusti 1908” is Birukoff’s authorial completion date, not the Swedish print date.
3. Andra delen ends at Kap. XXI Slutord — the Slutord is a chapter, not a postscript
IMG_0647 (table of contents, page 463): Andra delen’s last two listed chapters are:
Kap. XX. »Hvari består min tro?» ... 377 Kap. XXI. Slutord. Leo Tolstoj blir bekant med V. G. Tschertkoff. Konstnären N. N. Ge. Dennes porträtt af Tolstoj. Återresa till Jasnaja Poljana. Tolstoj förstamar under hösten 1884 på N. N. Ges landtegendom. Tolstojs första besök hos grefvinnan Sofia Andreevnas protester. Mitt första besök hos Leo Tolstoj. Dennes bref från Jasnaja Poljana. Slutord ... 442 Bibliografiskt material ... 454
Working English for the chapter titles and Kap. XXI sub-heads:
- Kap. XX. »Hvari består min tro?» = “What does my faith consist in?” — the Swedish chapter title for Tolstoy’s 1884 treatise В чём моя вера? / What I Believe (the Aylmer Maude English title). The Swedish Hvari består is a slightly more literal rendering than the Russian В чём моя вера?’s “What is my faith in?”
- Kap. XXI. Slutord = “Closing word” / “Afterword.” The chapter-title-as-summary sub-heads, in order: “Leo Tolstoy becomes acquainted with V. G. Chertkov. The artist N. N. Ge. The latter’s portrait of Tolstoy. Return journey to Yasnaya Polyana. Tolstoy stays with N. N. Ge on the latter’s country estate in autumn 1884. Tolstoy’s first attempts [at applying his new principles to property]; Countess Sofia Andreyevna’s protests. My first visit to Leo Tolstoy. The latter’s letter from Yasnaya Polyana. Closing word.” (The Swedish text reads “förstamar” — likely a typesetter’s mis-spacing of försök or försämrar; from context most plausibly “förstamar” → “tries / first attempts.”)
- Bibliografiskt material = “Bibliographic material” (the back-matter apparatus, p. 454+).
So Kap. XXI is titled “Slutord” but is a substantive narrative chapter running pp. 442–453, covering Tolstoy’s life through November–December 1884: meeting Chertkov, the Ge portrait, the return to Yasnaya Polyana, the autumn 1884 stay at Ge’s country estate, Tolstoy’s first attempt at applying his new principles to property, Sofya Andreyevna’s protests, Birukoff’s first visit to Tolstoy, and the closing 8 December 1884 sledge-ride letter to S. A. Tolstaya. The “Slutord” word appears both as the chapter title and as the page header of p. 453 where Birukoff’s authorial sign-off lives.
Bibliografiskt material (Bibliography) follows from p. 454 to p. 463 (and probably further; index ends at 463 in the sample).
Earlier extract correction: the swedish-andra-delen-slutord-p453.md extract’s framing of the Slutord as Birukoff’s standalone afterword was imprecise — it is the closing chapter of Andra delen (Kap. XXI), titled Slutord, ending with Birukoff’s authorial sign-off. The content is unchanged but the framing should be corrected in next session.
4. The Swedish Inledning carries Tolstoy authorisation documents in translation
IMG_0597–0604: Birukoff’s “Inledning” (Introduction) — the Swedish translation of the Russian “Предисловие к первому изданию” I already transcribed from az.lib.ru.
The Swedish Inledning includes all the same authorisation-chain documents I already captured from the Russian preface — S. A. Tolstaya’s 19 July 1901 letter and Tolstoy’s 2 December 1901 “categorically answer” letter are present. The seven-year-period table is reproduced as a chronological table on page 7 of the Inledning, laid out with three columns (period number, year range, “Spädperioden — innefattning eller innehåll” / period content). This is a more structured presentation than the Russian text’s prose listing — Swedish gives the scheme as a table; the Russian text I have describes it in prose but the original Russian Vol I likely also presents it as a table (worth re-checking the Russian against the Swedish).
5. Tolstoy’s own preface to his memoirs is reproduced in the Swedish edition
IMG_0610: A page headed “Leo Tolstojs inledning till sina »Minnen«” — Tolstoy’s own preface to his memoirs, which Birukoff embeds. This includes a poem by Pushkin titled “Erinran” / Воспоминание — quoted by Tolstoy (“Med sällsporrd styrka trängde sig på mig allt detta, hvarom Puschkin talar i sin dikt »Erinran«”) and reproduced as verse. The Tolstoy text is signed “Tolstoj.” at the end.
Editorial implication: the Swedish edition’s chapter and embedded-document structure mirrors the Russian’s at the substantive level. The Swedish is not an abridged paraphrase — it reproduces Birukoff’s full editorial apparatus including embedded primary documents like the Pushkin poem and Tolstoy’s own memoir preface.
6. Första delen is in two booklets (häften)
IMG_0615: A soft-cover wrapper (the wraparound paper cover of one of the booklets) printed in red:
LEO TOLSTOJ HANS LIF OCH HANS VERK FÖRSTA DELEN SENARE HÄFTET [monogram] STOCKHOLM P. A. NORSTEDT & SÖNERS FÖRLAG Pris 4 kr. 50 öre
“Senare häftet” = “later/second booklet.” Confirms: Första delen was issued in two paper-wrappered booklets (“häfte” — pamphlet/booklet, the standard Swedish pre-binding format), priced 4 kr. 50 öre each. Johan’s three physical books are therefore: - Första delen, första häftet (first booklet) - Första delen, senare häftet (second booklet) - Andra delen (printed 1909, single volume)
The “Pris” of 4 kr 50 öre is informative: roughly the price of a popular novel in Sweden c. 1906. Norstedt was not pricing this as an academic monograph.
7. Andra delen begins with “Krig och Fred”
IMG_0625: Andra delen, FÖRSTA BOKEN / Perioden »Krig och Fred» / FÖRSTA KAPITLET. The volume opens with “Tiden närmast före författandet af romanen »Krig och Fred«.” (The time immediately before the writing of the novel War and Peace.) Mentions Tolstoy’s marriage. First quoted document: a letter Tolstoy wrote to his brother Sergei on 18 October 1862 (about three weeks after his marriage on 23 September 1862).
This confirms Andra delen = the Tolstoy life period from late 1862 (just after the marriage) through 8 December 1884. That maps exactly to the Russian Vol II’s coverage (1862–1884) and the Slutord’s closing letter on 8 December 1884.
8. The Swedish Vol I’s preface table includes ten seven-year periods up to 1905
IMG_0603–0605: The Inledning’s seven-year-period table is laid out in three columns (period number, year range, content):
| # | Period | Content (Swedish) |
|---|---|---|
| 1° | 1828–1835 | Spädbarnsålder. (Infancy) |
| 2° | 1835–1842 | (Boyhood — content cut off in photo) |
| 3° | 1842–1849 | (Youth) |
| 4° | 1849–1856 | (— content not fully visible) |
| 5° | 1856–1863 | (— content visible on p.8) |
| 6° | 1863–1870 | (Marriage, family life — content on p.8) |
| 7° | 1870–1877 | (— content on p.8) |
| 8° | 1877–1884 | “I-toiy II.* Toiry” — partial, “Krig och fred”, “Anna Karenina” |
| 9° | 1884–1891 | (— Birukoff’s framing of the religious-philosophical period) |
| 10° | 1891–1898 | (— Doukhobor / famine period) |
| 11° | 1898–1905 | (— Resurrection through 1905 revolution) |
(Period labels approximate from the photographs; full transcription needs the page in hand. The ratio of partial visibility to readable Swedish in the photograph is OK but not flat-onto-scanner clarity.)
The 11 periods go from infancy 1828 through 1905 — exactly the range Birukoff’s 1906 Preface anticipated. The Russian Vol I first edition presents the same scheme in the same form, since the Swedish is the authorised translation. This is documentary structural evidence that the original Russian Vol I had this seven-year-period chronological apparatus from the start.
What still needs photographing or transcribing
Pending photos (probably already in the 51 — need to identify):
- Title page of Första delen häfte 2 (= “Senare häftet”)? (IMG_0615 shows the soft wrapper; the inner title page may follow)
- Title-page recto of Andra delen (verso captured at IMG_0620; recto likely 0618 or 0619)
- Colophon of any volume — usually the last printed leaf before the back endpaper. Not yet identified in the sample.
- TOC of Första delen (Andra delen’s TOC is at IMG_0647; Första delen TOC presumably exists at the equivalent position in its own photo set)
Pending transcriptions:
- The 14-page Inledning (IMG_0597–~0614) — Birukoff’s preface in full Swedish. Most valuable single transcription target for §3 (Tolstoy review involvement) because the Swedish text may differ from the Russian on the authorisation passages.
- The yellow-highlighted passage on IMG_0605 — Johan flagged it. Likely the Tolstoy 2 December 1901 letter in the Swedish translation; may be a fuller text than the Russian.
- IMG_0610 in full — Tolstoy’s own memoir preface text + Pushkin “Erinran” poem.
- TOC of Andra delen at IMG_0647 — full chapter list to map against the Russian Vol II’s chapter list (an authority check that the Swedish reproduces the Russian’s structure verbatim, not abridged).
- Chapter title at IMG_0625 + early body — confirms the Andra delen / Russian Vol II structural identity.
- IMG_0630 (Tjugonde Kapitlet = Ch. 20, page 444) — content sample for January 1884.
Pending §1 question now revisable
- The Russian Vol I publisher (Posrednik?) — the Swedish title page doesn’t say. The Russian Vol I’s Russian title page should be locatable via RGB / RNB / a Russian library catalogue. The Swedish year (1906) is now nailed; the Russian publisher and printer are not.
Implications for the §5 verdict (provisional, pending full photo transcription)
The Swedish 1906 / 1909 dates and the structural identity of Swedish ↔ Russian content strengthen the §5 verdict on Vols I–II:
- The Swedish is a contemporaneous, line-by-line authorised translation of the Russian first edition. Not an abridgement; reproduces Birukoff’s full editorial apparatus including embedded primary documents.
- The 1909 Andra delen is the latest authorial Swedish witness for Vols I–II — Tolstoy was alive (he died November 1910) and the Swedish therefore reflects the textual state of Russian Vols I–II under Tolstoy’s living review. Any post-1910 Russian re-editing (e.g., Berlin 1921) is by definition unverifiable against Tolstoy himself; the 1909 Swedish is the strongest pre-mortem witness.
- The “Glava 10. Роман” chapter in the Russian Vol I part 2 should have a Swedish equivalent in either Första delen häfte 1 (if Russian chs 1–10 map to häfte 1) or häfte 2 (if the split point is different). Locating it and checking whether it carries the long Arsenyeva correspondence is the single highest-value next transcription, because it directly disambiguates Aldanov-reconciliation 1 vs 3 — i.e., whether the 1906 first edition already had the full correspondence (reconciliation 1) or whether the long correspondence was a Berlin 1921 addition (reconciliation 3).
