# Visual Materials — «Христианское учение» (The Christian Teaching)

**Work:** The Christian Teaching (Христианское учение), written 1894–96; first published by V. G. Chertkov abroad, 1898.
**Intensity:** light (abstract treatise — keystone images + a few per major entity).
**Channels consulted:** local `primary-sources/` (tolstoydigital-TEI timeline images, jubilee-edition); Wikimedia Commons API (`generator=search` + `titles`, `prop=imageinfo&iiprop=url|extmetadata|size`); Internet Archive item `christianteachin01tols` (the source of the Commons first-edition PDF).
**Date of sweep:** 2026-06-13

**Summary:** 9 PD images downloaded into `visuals/` (git-ignored). 1 keystone photo of Tolstoy in the exact composition year (1896), 2 Repin works, 2 Chertkov portraits, the daughter/copyist Tatyana, and the 1898 first-edition title page + copyright page + LoC deposit-stamp page. The manuscript facsimile (2154 leaves, GTM/RGB) is documented-only, not downloadable. Evgeny Popov: no PD image found — skipped per brief.

## Local primary-sources check

Searched `primary-sources/` (6,891 image files). Relevant hits, all from `primary-sources/tolstoydigital-TEI/images/timeline_*` (sourced from tolstoy.ru / GTM, **rights uncertain — not used, documented only**):

| local file | subject | rights status | decision |
|------------|---------|---------------|----------|
| `tolstoydigital-TEI/images/timeline_tolstoy_life/198_Znakomstvo_s_V.G._Chertkovym.jpg` | Tolstoy meeting Chertkov | unknown (tolstoy.ru timeline asset) | not used — prefer Commons-PD V04/V05 with clean licence |
| `tolstoydigital-TEI/images/timeline_tolstoy_life/247_Vysylka_V.G._Chertkova_v_Angliju.jpg` | Chertkov's expulsion to England (1897) | unknown | documented only — relevant to genesis (Chertkov publishes abroad) but rights unclear |
| `tolstoydigital-TEI/images/timeline_voskresenie/vos-Tolstoy-Chertkov-1909.jpeg` | Tolstoy & Chertkov, 1909 | unknown | not used — post-dates the work; Commons V04/V05 preferred |

No local image carries a clear open licence, so all keystones were taken from Wikimedia Commons (clean PD provenance) instead.

## Notes

- **Keystones:** V01 (Tolstoy 1896 photo — exact composition year), V04 (Chertkov, 1890s Repin — the genesis figure), V06 (1898 first-edition title page naming Chertkov as translator). These three alone carry the dive.
- **First edition — actually found (better than expected).** The brief warned this would be hard; in fact the full 1898 first edition is on Commons/IA as a PD scan (`christianteachin01tols`), so the real title page (V06), copyright page (V07) and LoC deposit stamp (V08) were all extractable. This is the **US Stokes co-edition (New York, 1898)** — published the same year as the London Brotherhood Publishing Co. edition; both name Chertkov. A separate Russian «Христианское учение» (Purleigh, 1898) title page was **not** located in open repositories — record as needsReview if the Russian title page is specifically wanted.
- **Manuscript (V10):** confirmed not freely available. Documented provenance + request path only; `usable:false`, `needsReview`. Do not download.
- **Popov:** no PD image; skipped (brief said skip if no obvious PD hit).
- **Local images:** the tolstoydigital-TEI timeline assets that match (Chertkov, his 1897 expulsion to England, Tolstoy+Chertkov) are rights-uncertain (tolstoy.ru/GTM web assets) — documented but not used in favour of clean-PD Commons files.
- **Downloads:** 9 files in `visuals/` (git-ignored, safe for local embedding). All PD. Photos fetched via `Special:FilePath?width=1200`; first-edition pages via IA `christianteachin01tols` page service at full leaf resolution (1345×2203).
