# Thread-map — the "direct statement, published abroad" pole + channel mechanics

Mined from eight finished sibling dossiers for the theme-dive **"The late voice — encryption & compression (1900–1910)"**. These are the dives that hold the *direct-statement* end of Thread 1 (truths Tolstoy stated openly but could not legally print in Russia, so he routed them abroad through Chertkov), plus the legal-routing mechanism (copyright renunciation) and the most-cited *mutilated-legal-vs-full-abroad* split (Resurrection).

- **Thread 1 — Encryption under censorship** (genre-as-concealment, channel-as-workaround): the smoking gun is any moment Tolstoy names the constraint («нельзя печатать», «нецензурных мест», «не посылаю / не печатать») or the workaround (send to Chertkov, publish abroad, посмертно, copyright renounced so anyone may reprint).
- **Thread 2 — Compression of the late metaphysics**: distillation of the worldview into formula/aphorism; the anthology series as endpoint.

These eight dives sit almost entirely on Thread 1. Thread 2 surfaces here only as the *compressed-formula* moments inside the treatises (the title-as-formula, the single-sentence verdict) — the anthologies proper (Круг чтения, На каждый день, Путь жизни) are not the subject of any of these dives, so Thread 2 is recorded where a treatise distils itself to a sentence, flagged "2" or "both."

**Channel vocabulary used below.** *legal-RU* = legally printed in Russia in Tolstoy's lifetime; *abroad-Chertkov* = Chertkov's émigré press, «Свободное слово» / Free Word / Free Age Press (Maldon → Purleigh → Christchurch, England); *abroad-other* = a non-Chertkov foreign first edition (Paris, Berlin, Geneva); *banned-RU* = blocked / confiscated in Russia; *posthumous-RU* = full Russian text only after 1910/1917; *withheld* = Tolstoy suppressed it himself for a time.

Extract paths in the table are written **relative to this file** (which lives in `late-voice-encryption-compression/extracts/`), i.e. `../../<dive-slug>/extracts/<file>` — verified to resolve on disk. (Relative to the *dive root* that is `../<dive-slug>/extracts/<file>`; `verify_quotes.py` resolves the `../` fine from wherever it is run.) Russian is copied byte-exact from each sibling dossier's `quoteRu` (abbreviated with […] only where noted, kept exact). English is each dossier's labelled "(working English)."

## Per-dive marquee findings + channel/genre classification

### 1900 — The Slavery of Our Times (`1900-the-slavery-of-our-times`)
**Marquee (encryption/compression):** a book-length systematic treatise (direct pole — genre carries no concealment), but its publication is pure abroad-first mechanics: first published 1900 by Chertkov's Free Word in England; the first chapters were *set* in Russia by *Северный курьер* (March 1900) and blocked when the Interior Minister threatened to close the paper; only excerpts ran in Russia; the 1911 collected-works printing was confiscated by Moscow court order (19 Apr 1911); full Russian text only **1917** (posthumous). A second, internal channel: the Chertkovs' own *editorial* alteration at Free Word (e.g. «сенокосом»→«науками» in ch. VI) — concealment by the publisher, not the state.
**Genre:** treatise (direct). **Channel:** abroad-Chertkov → banned-RU → posthumous-RU (1917).

### 1901–1902 — What Is Religion and What Is Its Essence? (`1901-1902-what-is-religion`)
**Marquee:** the clearest, most systematic distillation of the late metaphysics into a *definition* and a four-proposition "universal religion" — a Thread-2 compression endpoint inside a treatise (the worldview reduced to: God as source; the divine particle in man; subdue passion / increase love; the Golden Rule). Channel: written at Gaspra during grave illness, sent to Chertkov, first published abroad by «Свободное слово» (No. 75, Christchurch, 1902); banned in Russia; first legal Russian printing **1906** (Земля и труд). A censorship-circumvention attempt via the journal *Образование* (Dec 1902) also failed (blocked Jan 1903).
**Genre:** treatise/essay (direct), but compression-bearing. **Channel:** abroad-Chertkov → banned-RU → legal-RU 1906.

### 1904 — Bethink Yourselves! (`1904-bethink-yourselves`)
**Marquee:** anti-war essay whose *title* is itself a compressed religious imperative — the Greek μετανοεῖτε glossed "bethink yourselves," the whole social cure folded into one individual act. Channel: banned outright in Russia; first appeared abroad (The Times, London, 27 June 1904) and via Chertkov's Free Age Press the same year; the 1906 Обновление pamphlet and the 1911 collected-works vol. 19 were both confiscated — never legally published in Russia in his lifetime. Tolstoy gave Chertkov carte blanche to cut the harsh words («пожалуйста, выкиньте всё такое»); Chertkov made six documented proof cuts.
**Genre:** essay (direct) + title-as-aphorism (Thread 2). **Channel:** abroad-Chertkov + abroad-other (The Times) → banned-RU (posthumous full).

### 1908 — The Law of Violence and the Law of Love (`1908-the-law-of-violence-and-the-law-of-love`)
**Marquee:** the last systematic statement of non-resistance, and the title is the compressed formula of the whole doctrine ("the replacement of the law of violence with the law of love"). Channel is the *partial-legal-vs-full-abroad* variant: unlike most late non-resistance works it DID appear in Russia in his lifetime — but only partially (preface + chs I–VII) and with censorship cuts, in «Киевские вести» (Kyiv, Feb 1909); the complete text first abroad via Chertkov's Free Age Press / «Свободное слово» (Christchurch, 1909), with a corrected text 1917.
**Genre:** treatise (direct) + title-as-formula (Thread 2). **Channel:** legal-RU (partial/cut) + abroad-Chertkov (complete) → posthumous corrected (1917).

### Copyright renunciation (`copyright-renunciation`)
**Marquee (the legal-routing MECHANISM):** this is the dive that documents *how* works were placed in the public domain so anyone could print them — the structural enabler of the abroad-first / free-reprint channel. The 1891 public declaration renounced copyright on everything written from 1881 onward, "to publish gratis, in Russia and abroad, in Russian and in translations"; the philosophical ground (1883) is that property defended by violence is the evil, not property itself; the 1910 Explanatory Note (drafted by Chertkov) gave the renunciation binding legal form — all writings "no one's private property … published and reprinted by anyone who wishes." Sofia Tolstaya opposed it and redacted 19 lines of the 22 July 1891 diary (a household-level act of suppression).
**Genre:** declaration/diary/will (direct). **Channel:** the mechanism that makes abroad-Chertkov + free-reprint possible; not itself banned.

### 1890–1893 — The Kingdom of God Is Within You (`1890-1893-the-kingdom-of-god-is-within-you`)
**Marquee (the abroad-first template):** the great non-resistance synthesis; the canonical case of abroad-first publication. First published in *any* language as the French *Le salut est en vous* (Paris: Perrin, Oct 1893); first-printed Russian abroad (Berlin: Deubner, Jan 1894) and German (Stuttgart, Jan 1894); banned in Russia (the foreign-publications censorship called it "the most harmful book it ever had to ban"; Feoktistov's secret circular, 18 May 1894, put printers and typewriter-owners under surveillance), then flooded back in hectograph; first legal Russian printing only **1906**. Mid-composition, Tolstoy refused Chertkov's wish to soften the attacks — the uncompromising tone is load-bearing, not negotiable.
**Genre:** treatise (direct). **Channel:** abroad-other (Paris first) + abroad (Berlin/Stuttgart) → banned-RU → legal-RU 1906.

### 1893–1894 — Christianity and Patriotism (`1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism`)
**Marquee (the withheld-then-released case):** anti-patriotism polemic. Two encryption-adjacent facts: (a) Tolstoy *withheld* it himself — finished it and "decided not to translate it and not to print it … and that relieved me," then reversed within a month and sent it to the translators; (b) inside the text, real names were *encrypted* in late redaction (Déroulède → «наш гость»). Channel: abroad first — French (Journal des Débats, May 1894; then Perrin pamphlet), English (Daily Chronicle, June 1894), Russian-abroad (Elpidin, Geneva 1895); banned in Russia, circulated in hectograph and smuggled copies; first legal Russian printing **1906** (Обновление; publisher Felten prosecuted).
**Genre:** essay (direct) + in-text name-encryption (a literal Thread-1 concealment device). **Channel:** withheld → abroad-other (Paris/London) + abroad-Russian (Geneva) → banned-RU → legal-RU 1906.

### 1889–1899 — Resurrection (`1889-1899-resurrection`)
**Marquee (the mutilated-legal-vs-full-abroad split — the keystone case):** the novel ran *legally* in «Нива» (Marks, 1899) but heavily mutilated — V. D. Bonch-Bruevich counted 497 distortions/omissions across 10,240 words; only 25 of 123 chapters printed undistorted; the prison-church communion chapters (Part I, XXXIX–XL) were cut WHOLESALE, leaving the Russian serial reader only the four words «Началось богослужение.» The complete uncensored text was printed *simultaneously abroad* by Chertkov's «Свободное слово» (Purleigh, Essex); first complete Russian text only **1936**. Fiction here is doing the encryption work the treatises could not: the Eucharist satire is the most-censored passage AND the «последняя и высшая степень» named in the 1901 excommunication decree. The novel's fees were the channel's funding source (sold to fund the Doukhobor emigration; fees routed «Нива» → Chertkov in England).
**Genre:** novel (fiction-as-vehicle — the defamiliarised liturgy says what a treatise would have had banned outright). **Channel:** mutilated-legal-RU («Нива») || full abroad-Chertkov (simultaneous) → full Russian posthumous (1936).

Это нарушает весь тон, а тон выражает чувство, а чувство заражает | To soften, with qualifications, is impossible. It destroys the whole tone, and the tone expresses the feeling, and the feeling infects [the reader]. | `../../1890-1893-the-kingdom-of-god-is-within-you/extracts/v87_304_CHertkovu_1891_12_14.txt` | Tolstoy refuses Chertkov's wish to soften — directness is the point; the abroad channel is *what lets him keep it* uncut. |
| `1890-1893-the-kingdom-of-god-is-within-you:kgd-diary-04` | 1 | diary | abroad-other (completion→relay) | Вчера отослал совсем. | Yesterday I sent it off for good. | `../../1890-1893-the-kingdom-of-god-is-within-you/extracts/v52_078_078_1893_05_14.txt` | Completion = dispatch to the translators abroad (the work first appeared in French, Paris 1893, not in Russia). |
| `1890-1893-the-kingdom-of-god-is-within-you:kgd-text-11` | 2 | works | abroad-other | Одумайтесь, люди, и веруйте в Евангелие, в учение о благе. | Bethink yourselves, people, and believe in the Gospel, in the teaching of the good. | `../../1890-1893-the-kingdom-of-god-is-within-you/extracts/v28_001_293_Tsarstvo_bozhie_vnutri_vas.txt` | The same compressed μετανοεῖτε imperative that titles the 1904 essay — a Thread-2 formula recurring across the late corpus. |
| `1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism:D3` | 1 | diary | withheld → released | За всё это время писал Тулон и дней 5 тому назад кончил и решил не переводить и не печатать. И это облегчило меня. | All this time I was writing Toulon, and finished it five days ago, and decided not to translate it and not to print it. And that relieved me. | `../../1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism/extracts/v52_112_114_1894_03_09.txt` | The self-withholding moment: Tolstoy suppresses the finished essay («не печатать») — concealment by the author himself, before the reversal. |
| `1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism:D4` | 1 | diary | released abroad | Тулон решил послать переводчикам. Все одобряют. | Toulon — decided to send to the translators. Everyone approves. | `../../1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism/extracts/v52_114_116_1894_04_21.txt` | The reversal: within a month the withheld essay is released to the abroad-translation channel. |
| `1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism:L1` | 1 | letter | abroad-other (English press) | Еще написал статью протест против франко-русских празднеств […] Эту статью пошлю в английские газеты. | I have also written an article — a protest against the Franco-Russian festivities … This article I shall send to the English papers. | `../../1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism/extracts/v66_561_D_A_Xilkovu.txt` | The channel fixed at the outset: the English press, not Russian print — abroad-first by design. |
| `1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism:W13` | 2 / 1 | works | abroad-other | нужно только не лгать | one need only not lie. | `../../1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism/extracts/v39_027_080_Hristianstvo_i_patriotizm.txt` | The remedy compressed to three words («не лгать») — both a Thread-2 aphorism and the seed of the "refusal to lie" ethic that the encryption theme turns on. |
| `1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism:W12` | 2 | works | abroad-other | Патриотизм есть рабство. | Patriotism is slavery. | `../../1893-1894-christianity-and-patriotism/extracts/v39_027_080_Hristianstvo_i_patriotizm.txt` | The essay's most compressed verdict — a three-word aphorism carrying the whole argument. |

### Notes for the synthesising dive
- **Channel pattern across the eight:** the dominant route is *abroad-Chertkov* (Свободное слово / Free Word / Free Age Press). The variants worth keeping distinct are (a) *abroad-other-first* where a non-Chertkov foreign edition came first — Kingdom of God (French, Paris 1893) and Christianity and Patriotism (French/English press, then Geneva-Russian) — and (b) the *partial/mutilated-legal-RU* cases where something DID print in Russia but cut: Law of Violence (Киевские вести, partial) and Resurrection («Нива», 497 distortions, communion chapters gone).
- **Resurrection is the sharpest single exhibit of the dive's lead thread:** fiction carries the truth the censor would never have passed as a treatise (the Eucharist named only as physical actions), and the same passage is both the most-censored in the legal text and the «последняя и высшая степень» of the excommunication — encryption *and* its detection in one scene.
- **Copyright renunciation is the load-bearing mechanism**, not a content dive: it is *why* "publish abroad, anyone may reprint" was legally possible; pair its two rows with any channel claim.
- **Thread 2 here is treatise-internal compression** (title-as-formula; single-sentence verdict; the four-proposition religion). The anthology series proper (Мысли мудрых людей → Круг чтения → На каждый день → Путь жизни) is NOT covered by any of these eight dives — it needs its own fresh sweep; these rows only show the distillation *reflex* that the anthologies industrialise.
- **Recurring formula:** the μетanоeite / «одумайтесь» imperative appears compressed in both Kingdom of God (1893, `kgd-text-11`) and as the title of Bethink Yourselves! (1904, `odum-metanoeite`) — a single aphoristic seed reused across 11 years.
